Classcraft alternative

Classcraft is gone. Here's a calm place to land.

HMH shut down the original Classcraft in 2024. If you used it to catch kids being good and let them cheer for an avatar, Chou Chou Teach keeps that heart — positive-only and privacy-first.

  • Positive-only points
  • Student avatars
  • No student logins

Free for teachers during the summer beta · no credit card needed.

What happened to Classcraft?

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt acquired Classcraft and then retired the original platform on June 30, 2024. The replacement, HMH Classcraft, is a curriculum product for schools and districts — it doesn't carry over the behavior-management and game features individual teachers relied on, and there was no automatic migration. That left a lot of teachers looking for somewhere new to go.

Chou Chou Teach won't reproduce Classcraft's full role-playing game. What it does keep is the part most teachers loved: noticing good behavior and letting every student cheer for a character — without the punishment mechanics, and without collecting much student data at all.

What you keep with Chou Chou Teach

An avatar to cheer for

Students pick one of 38 woodland creatures and root for it as they earn points — the fun part, minus the data.

Privacy-first

First names and avatars only. No student logins, last names, or photos, and no parent accounts.

A real teacher toolkit

Timer, noise meter, name picker, group maker, and more — the everyday tools that keep your room running.

Flat, honest pricing

$3/month per teacher with no ads and nothing sold to families. Free for all teachers during the summer beta.

PBIS-aligned

Built around positive reinforcement, so it fits a positive-behavior classroom out of the box.

Frequently asked questions

Is Classcraft shut down?
Yes. After acquiring Classcraft, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) discontinued the original Classcraft platform on June 30, 2024. The classic behavior and gamification tools teachers used are no longer available.
Is HMH Classcraft the same as the old Classcraft?
No. HMH Classcraft is a curriculum-integrated product sold to schools and districts. It does not include the original behavior-management and role-playing game features, and there was no automated transition for individual teachers.
What is the best Classcraft alternative for positive behavior?
If what you valued was positive points and recognition, Chou Chou Teach is a simple, privacy-first option: positive-only points, student avatars, and built-in teacher tools, for $3/month. If you specifically need full role-playing-game mechanics, that's a different category of tool.
Does Chou Chou Teach work like Classcraft's RPG?
Not exactly. Chou Chou Teach keeps the heart of Classcraft — recognizing good behavior and letting students cheer for an avatar — but it's intentionally calm and simple rather than a full fantasy RPG. Points only go up, and there's no health/damage or punishment mechanic.
How do I move my class over from Classcraft?
Setup takes a few minutes. Because a class in Chou Chou Teach is just first names and avatars, you can recreate your roster quickly and start awarding positive points the same day, with a free trial and a free summer beta for all teachers.
